SUMMARY:CEAFU Lunch Break (2/23): CUNY Educators' Religious Rights
DESCRIPTION:How SCOTUS has an opportunity to address a longstanding injustice (with Attorney Glenn Taubman)\nLink to recording \nAbout the Case — Does this happen in your school or university? Do you know your rights?\n\nFor decades\, government sector union bosses have relied on two pillars of coercion — forced dues and forced representation — to maintain their grip on power over America’s public servants and the public services citizens rely on. \n\n\n\nWhile the Supreme Court in the 2018 National Right to Work Foundation-won Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court case recognized that forcing government employees to pay dues to stay employed violates the First Amendment\, a new Foundation-assisted civil rights lawsuit from six City University of New York (CUNY) system professors may finally defeat union bosses’ privilege to impose union representation over the objections of public workers. \n\n\n\nCUNY professors Jeffrey Lax\, Michael Goldstein\, Avraham Goldstein\, Frimette Kass-Shraibman\, Mitchell Langbert\, and Maria Pagano sued the AFL-CIO-affiliated Professional Staff Congress (PSC) union\, CUNY executives\, and New York State officials in January\, challenging New York State’s “Taylor Law” that gives unions monopoly bargaining privileges in public sector workplaces like CUNY. \n\n\n\nThe plaintiffs\, most of whom are Jewish\, oppose the union’s “representation” on the grounds that union officials and adherents have relentlessly denigrated their religious and cultural identity. Several of the plaintiffs exercised their Janus right to cut off dues after PSC officials rammed through a resolution in June 2021 that they found “anti-Semitic\, anti-Jewish\, and anti-Israel\,” according to the lawsuit. \n\n\n\nDiscrimination Cited in Groundbreaking First Amendment Case \n\n\n\nThe lawsuit\, which was filed with legal aid from both the National Right to Work Foundation and Pennsylvania-based Fairness Center\, says: “Despite Plaintiffs’ resignations from membership in PSC\, Defendants . . . acting in concert and under color of state law\, force all Plaintiffs to continue to utilize PSC as their exclusive bargaining representative.” \n\n\n\nThe resolution is not nearly the worst example of PSC officials’ anti-Semitism\, according to the lawsuit. Prof. Michael Goldstein asserts that adherents of PSC are waging a campaign to get him fired and have targeted him with harassment and threats such that he must have an armed guard accompany him on campus. Prof. Lax cites in the lawsuit a determination he has already received from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that “PSC leaders discriminated against him\, retaliated against him\, and subjected him to a hostile work environment on the basis of religion.” \n\n\n\nWhile all of the professors take issue with PSC bosses’ radicalism\, they also want to break free from internal conflicts within the large and disparate unit\, which consists of full-time\, part-time\, and adjunct teaching employees and others. Prof. Kass-Shraibman states in the lawsuit that “instead of prioritizing the pay of full-time faculty\, PSC expended resources advocating on behalf of teachers in Peru\, graduate students at various other universities and the so-called ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement.” \n\n\n\nOn top of all that\, Profs. Avraham Goldstein\, Kass-Shraibman\, and Langbert contend that PSC officials aren’t even respecting their First Amendment Janus rights. Although all three professors clearly indicated they wanted to cut off financial support to the union\, the lawsuit explains that “Defendants PSC and the City . . . have taken and continue to take and/or have accepted and continue to accept union dues from [their] wages as a condition of employment…” in violation of Janus. \n\n\n\n(Read more about Goldstein v. PSC/CUNY in the Foundation’s website) \n\n

SUMMARY:CEAFU Lunch Break: Are Union Presidents Like Randi Weingarten Alienating Teachers?
DESCRIPTION:CEAFU Lunch Break with guest Kali Fontanilla\nKali serves as a Capital Research Center Senior fellow\, particularly focusing on topics related to K-12 public education. \nIn a recent blog article\, “President of Teachers Union Tries to Rewrite History . . . and Fails”\, Kali Fontanilla highlighted an X (formerly Twitter) post by Randi Weingarten. \nThe American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union president\, Weingarten’s post expressed that “In-person learning is where kids do best\, which is why educators & their unions worked hard to reopen US schools for safe in-person learning beginning back in April 2020 and why we’ve spent the last several years following the pandemic prioritizing public schooling & investing in #RealSolutionsForKids that help them recover & thrive.” \nKali inquired: “Is she [Weingarten] deluded or straight-up lying?” about the nationwide school shutdowns promoted by Weingarten. \nKali suggests\, “Maybe she is banking off the fact that America seems to easily forgive and forget once time has passed. But the detrimental effects of the shutdowns on a whole generation’s educational progress certainly lives on\, and the key role teachers unions played in both shutting down in-person learning and keeping schools closed during the COVID pandemic is historical fact\, no matter what Weingarten tweets.” \nWe believed it would be intriguing to inquire with an expert such as Kali if national teacher union presidents like Weingarten are alienating teachers. If that is the case\, the team at Concern Educators Against Forced Unionism (CEAFU.org) is well aware of several teachers’ organizations that are eager to assist instructors in their primary objective of educating students and thereby enabling them to flourish in the real world. \nKali will participate in our discussion to provide answers regarding Big Ed and its impact on education and teaching profession. She will be available to answer your questions as well. \nSo\, sign up today for the free CEAFU Lunch Break to ask your questions and provide your insights to others.\nWe hope you will join us! \nThe article by Kali\, which is referenced in this introduction\, is available on the Capital Research website at the following link: https://capitalresearch.org/article/president-of-teachers-union-tries-to-rewrite-history-and-fails/ \nTo read other recent posts by Kali visit her content link: at Capital Research: https://capitalresearch.org/person/kali-fontanilla/ \nAbout Kali \nKali is serving as CRC’s Senior fellow\, particularly focusing on topics related to K-12 public education. She has 15 years of experience as a credentialed educator working in public and Christian schools teaching multiple subjects and grade levels. Her rebuttal statement to Prop 16 in California helped to stop the push for legal “reverse racism” and a new extreme version of “affirmative action” in 2020. She wrote the guide for the BLEXIT Foundation to expose the dangers of Critical Race Theory. After leaving the public school system\, Kali founded the Exodus Institute\, a fully accredited K-12 grade online school that seeks to redefine education in the 21st century by joining technology with traditional values. She has been featured in newspapers across the country including the Epoch Times\, Associated Press\, Boston Globe\, etc.
