During the 2009-2010 school year, 24 of the 40 states with charter schools had at least one institution that maintained a bargaining agreement with a union.

All charter schools in Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, and Maryland were unionized, along with 171 in Wisconsin, 122 in California, and 42 in Ohio. These academies constitute 72% of the unionized charter schools in the country.
