Mike Antonucci keeps us up to date on what’s happening at NEA’s annual convention. The “Fan Club” proposal has gone down in flames. It seems NEA members are not hot about letting “community allies” in, Janus decision or not.
A constitutional amendment that would have established a “community ally” category fell just short (61%) of achieving the necessary two-thirds majority.
This is the 4th time in the last 12 years such a measure has failed to win the approval of NEA delegates. Union leaders lobbied heavily for passage this time.
The primary reason behind the idea was to be able to solicit PAC contributions from a wider array of people. Federal law prohibits unions from accepting PAC donations from non-members.
