Karen Lewis: Money For Pension Funds, Not Schools
For Karen Lewis, Chicago Teacher Union president, it’s never about the kids. In her latest jeremiad she criticizes officials for putting education budge money into opening charters and turning around schools instead of enriching the teacher union pension fund.
Greg Hinz has the story in Crain’s Chicago Business.
In her speech, Ms. Lewis, often in very colorful terms, returned to familiar themes that pension changes backed by the mayor include unacceptable cuts to retirees and would not be needed if the city instead raised revenue from other sources, especially the wealthy.
The problem, Ms. Lewis said, is that, instead of asking the 1 percent to pay their fair share, Mr. Emanuel is allied with the rich, even though they’re bent on “destroying our city like a swarm of Gucci-winged locusts.”
