Flint Community Schools Mass “Sick-out” Puts Future Education at Risk
Flint Community Schools were closed after more than 100 teachers and employees called in as part of a mass United Teachers of Flint union-led “sick-out” to demand higher pay.
These drastic actions don’t come without consequences. Most notably, the education of students hangs in the balance.
“What’s unfortunate is that our kids are losing today because of what we are doing at the table,” says [Flint Community Schools Superintendent Kevelin] Jones.

Yielding to the United Teachers of Flint union’s demands could also lead to a potential reduction in teachers, students, and even schools due to budget constraints.
Superintendent Jones says he knows the Flint Community Schools deserves more but stands with the school board’s decision, citing the budget deficit.
“The district, the board is focused on everyone,” says Jones. “Trying to ensure we are a district in the next 5-10 years.”

Despite the pressures the union bosses put on teachers, participation is ultimately voluntary. All teachers have the right to work, regardless of union demands.
