AFSCME Union Strike Disrupts UC Operations Despite University Concessions

The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has announced plans to strike across multiple University of California (UC) campuses, creating unnecessary disruptions to students, faculty, and essential university operations. Despite the university’s efforts to negotiate in good faith and accommodate worker concerns, the union has chosen to move forward with its strike, putting additional strain on campus services.

The UC system has already taken significant steps to address worker needs, including the promise of substantial increases in wages and monthly credits to offset employee premium increases.

Meanwhile, the union has refused to respond to negotiation offers from the university and is instead resorting to extreme actions without first reviewing the concessions made in their favor.

By choosing to strike despite these efforts, the AFSCME union is creating unnecessary hardship for students and employees who depend on essential services. University officials have emphasized that they remain committed to resolving disputes through negotiation rather than walkouts that disrupt campus life.  While the union pushes forward with its agenda, it’s important to remember that participation in the strike is voluntary. No worker is required to walk out, and those who choose to continue working should be able to do so without pressure or retaliation.
