Manhattan School of Music Strike Continues Despite Significant Wage Offer

Faculty members at the Manhattan School of Music (MSM) have launched a weeklong strike led by ARTS-MSM, disrupting instruction for students despite ongoing negotiations and a substantial wage proposal from the school.

MSM officials expressed disappointment in the union’s decision to strike, emphasizing that they have been negotiating in good faith since June 2024.

“MSM has engaged in negotiations with the union’s negotiating team in good faith and has made a significant contract proposal, which will increase the current minimum hourly wage,” a spokesperson stated.

The school’s proposal includes a 14.75% increase in the first year of the contract, retroactive to September 2024, and a nearly 64% increase by the fourth year, bringing the minimum hourly wage to $100. For faculty caught in the midst of the conflict, it is important to remember that participation in the strike is voluntary. Those who choose to continue teaching have the right to do so without pressure or retaliation.
