Brace yourselves for more potential classroom chaos as the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Bosses are gearing up for yet another strike.
Strike could start as early as March 7, 2025.
Attention Chicago educators! Brace yourselves for more potential classroom chaos as the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Bosses are gearing up for yet another strike, which could start as early as tomorrow, March 7, 2025. This looming disruption threatens to upend the lives of students, parents, and teachers alike in the Windy City.
The CTU union officials have a notorious history of abandoning Chicago’s students, having walked out on them an astonishing five times in just the past 13 years. Let’s take a closer look at their track record:
- In 2012, a seven-day strike during contract negotiations left kids twiddling their thumbs instead of learning in the classroom.
- On April Fool’s Day 2016, the CTU staged an illegal one-day strike, protesting the alleged “union-busting” tactics of Republican Governor Bruce Rauner, Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and CPS CEO Forrest Claypool.
- In 2019, an 11-day strike during contract talks shuttered schools, depriving students of valuable instructional time.
- January 2021 saw the CTU refuse to return to in-person learning after COVID-19 closures, resulting in canceled classes and frustrated families.
- Just a year later, in January 2022, the union walked out for five days, notifying parents after 11 p.m. on a school night, leaving them scrambling for childcare solutions.
Due to monopoly bargaining contracts with Chicago Public Schools, all teachers are forced to be represented by CTU union officers, whether they support the union’s actions or not. This lack of choice has long been a point of contention for numerous educators.
However, there’s a silver lining for Chicago’s teachers! Thanks to the tireless efforts of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation and the Freedom Foundation, a landmark victory was secured in the Janus v. AFSCME case at the U.S. Supreme Court. This ruling ensures that public employees, including Chicago Public School teachers, cannot be compelled to pay or financially support the CTU union or any other public employee union if they disagree with their actions or simply just choose not to donate your wages to the union.
As a Chicago educator, you have the power to decide whether your hard-earned money goes to a union that repeatedly disrupts your students’ education. Stay informed and know your rights.
