Union Officials Push College Strike, Disrupting Student Services Despite Ongoing Talks

Union officials at the University of Oregon-backed Student Workers (UOSW) have ordered a strike, forcing student workers off the job and leaving university administrators to scramble to maintain essential services. Despite several days of mediation and recent progress in negotiations, union bosses chose to move forward with a walkout—prioritizing confrontation over constructive dialogue.

“After several days of mediation, university leadership … are disappointed a strike is the path being taken,” the university stated.

University officials quickly implemented contingency plans to limit the damage, working to ensure that students continue receiving vital campus services. Angela Lauer Chong, Vice President of Student Life, emphasized the school’s commitment to its students, stating, “We want to care for our students. We’re one community.”

The administration has made it clear that it remains committed to reaching a resolution that balances student needs with financial responsibility. However, that effort has been undercut by aggressive union tactics, which have created confusion and instability across campus.

While union bosses continue to push their agenda, it’s critical for student workers and staff to know their rights. Participation in any union-ordered strike is completely voluntary. No one can be forced to walk off the job or face retaliation for choosing to keep working. In fact, public employees—including student workers—can resign from union membership at any time, freeing themselves from union pressure, dues payments, and strike mandates.

Those who choose to serve their campus community during this disruption should be supported, not penalized.
