New York Teacher Union Officials Garner More Power

A retired Ithaca school teacher has been tapped to fill an opening on the New York State Board of Regents, a 17-member governing body that sets education policy for the state.

Susan Mittler, of Ithaca, is the favorite to fill a vacancy left by longtime board member James Tallon, Jr., a former state assemblyman who served on the board for 15 years.

She has close ties to teachers’ unions, having served as president of the Ithaca Teacher Association for nearly two decades and several years as a policy board member for New York State United Teachers, the state’s major teachers’ union.

A graduate of Cornell University and SUNY Cortland, Mittler today leads her own business consulting on education issues, including teacher mentorship, curriculum development and collective bargaining.
