Michigan School Employees Use Janus to Recoup Illegal Dues

Calling upon the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation’s landmark Supreme Court case, Janus v. AFSCME Local 31, 13 public school employees have successfully recouped dues paid to the Michigan Education Association (MEA) in what may be considered a double victory, considering Michigan is a Right to Work state also.  Bruce Walker has the story in thecentersquare.com.

At issue was whether the union could charge dues legally from members who chose to exercise their right to resign from the MEA after Michigan officially became a right-to-work (RTW) state in 2013.

The MEA, however, only offered a brief window of time during which members could resign their membership, a strategy found illegal in 2014 by the Michigan Employment Relations Committee.
