United DePaul’s May Day Strike Aims to Threaten University Administration

On May 1st, United DePaul organized a one-day strike that caused significant disruptions across DePaul University’s campus. The strike was timed to coincide with International Workers’ Day, no doubt aiming to broadcast a statement rather than come to any form of amicable agreement with the DePaul University administration.

The strike was bolstered by support from groups such as Planned Parenthood Generation Action, Political Discourse Society, Students for Justice in Palestine, and Young Democratic Socialists of America, all pushing for aggressive tactics that forced canceled classes and disrupted services.

“We’re going to make them care about us,” Nitaawe Banks, a DePaul graduate student, stated during a speech. This statement is just one example of the threats and demanding language being used to strike fear among university administration, and it raises concerns about the long-term consequences of such actions on the university’s academic environment as a whole.

It’s crucial for faculty, staff, and students to understand that participation in this strike is entirely voluntary, and no one should feel pressured to join.
